Home-Start wants to see a society in which every parent has the support they need to give their children the best possible start in life.We all need support and friendship sometimes. If a family is going through tough times our volunteers are there to help.
What we do
We provide one-to-one support for parents.
We recognise that often the best way to help children is to support their parents, helping them give their children the best possible start in life, and our trained volunteers are there to give that encouragement and support Parents helping Parents, it's simple and it works!
Our volunteers visit the family's home for a couple of hours every week. They tailor-make their support to the needs of each individual family. Volunteers are very committed and will visit until the parents feel they can stand on their own two feet. Parents and volunteers often develop a deeply trusting relationship which can lead to powerful change within the family, and the fruits of that support can be seen in improved health and well-being and better family relationships.
We also run family groups and social events so, as families enjoy themselves, they also help each other grow and broaden their relationships.
- We offer families choice
- We work in partnership – with each other, with families and with other agencies,
- We work in a spirit of openness, encouragement and enjoyment
- We are flexible and responsive to the needs of families.
Why it matters
Children who are raised in a stable, loving, family environment are more likely to have a positive and healthy future. The five years between birth and school are particularly important for a child's development. But it doesn’t stop there. Experiences all through childhood strongly determine the opportunities and life chances our children have. This is why we now work with families of children up to the age of 13 in certain areas.
Being a parent isn't easy and sometimes life can get in the way of the good start you want to give your son or daughter. Circumstances throw you off course and everything else can take a back seat. A child caught up in this can miss out on the love, routine and stimulation that are so vital for their future.
Home-Start works because our volunteers are parents. They understand how hard it can be. They work alongside parents, in their own homes, to help them cope with the stresses and strains of life and make sure they have the skills, time and strength they need to nurture their children.
Supporting our volunteers we have a dedicated team of Coordinators, Fundraisers and Trustees, providing the back-up they need.
